May's brooms and May people.

It is Portuguese tradition for centuries (going back to the Roman period, if not earlier, since the first night of May had, for example, the Beltane feast for the celebration of the fertility that closes Spring and opens Summer) to hang yellow broom (the variants of any colour being folksy and scholarly called giestas in Portuguese) flower branches (folksy-wise named "Maios", literally "Mays") at the entry of homes on the eve of May 1st (which before being a day associated with the labour/workers movement, was a day associated with Spring's last "peak"), with the Roman goddess Maia (after whom the month was named), and which was anthropomorphised by the Portuguese folk (probably as some pre-Roman leftover) as "Maio" (May), associated as a gender-changing figure that traveled around on the carro do Maio (or "May's cart") called in Lâmego and Viana do Castelo "carro das ervas" ("herbs cart"). The branches are explained as a mixture of celebration of Spring in bloom and as a semitic influence of being a protection from bad spirits comparable to the lamb's blood in the homes of the Israelites in the night the angel of death went around Egypt right before their Exodus, which makes sense since the personified Maio was deemed an evil entity (either due to the common flower allergies or Christianity stigmatising the month due to pagan feasts like Beltane) and in the Algarve some refused to name the month and just said "the month after April" or called it Burro ("Donkey"/"Jackass") or Carrapato ("Tick-bug"). In the Algarve, people even eat a slice of cake and drink a glass of aguardente ("firewater-brandy") "to keep the May out". Theories. The celebration is nice though, fella. As is the Algarve custom of setting up scarecrow-like dolls representing male and/or female personified Mays, left at the edges of roads as celebration of crops and Spring flowerings, but after almost being a lost custom (as the setting of dance guilds called Maias who held a contest of the dance balls with the most people) coming back as mostly a localised satire.

Giestas de Maio e Maios

É uma tradição portuguesa há séculos (recuando ao período romano, se não anteriormente, desde que a primeira noite de Maio tinha, por exemplo, a festa de Beltane para a celebração da fertilidade que fecha a Primavera e abre o Verão) de pendurar ramos de giestas amarelas (as variantes de qualquer cor sendo popularmente e eruditamente chamadas giestas em Português; as amarelas popularmente nomeadas "Maios", literalmente do mês) às entradas dos lares na véspera do 1.º de Maio (o qual antes de ser um dia associado com o movimento do trabalho/dos trabalhadores, era um dia associado ao último "pico" da Primavera), com a deusa romana Mai (no seguimento da qual o mês foi nomeado), e o qual foi antropomorfizado pela gente portuguesa (provavelmente como algum requício pré-romano) como "Maio", associado como uma figura cambiante de género que viajava por aí no carro do Maio chamado em Lâmego e Viana do Castelo "carro das ervas". Os ramos são explicados como uma mistura de celebração de Primavera em flor e como uma influência semita de ser uma proteção de maus espíritos comparável ao sangue de cordeiro nos lares dos Israelitas na noite que o anjo da morte andou pelo Egipto antes do seu Êxodo, o que faz sentido visto que o Maio personificado era considerado uma entidade maléfica (ou devido a alergias a flores comuns ou o Cristianismo estigmatizando o mês devido a festas pagãs como o Beltane) e no Algarve alguns recusavam nomear o mês e diziam só "o mês depois de Abril" ou chamavam-lhe Burro ou Carrapato. No Algarve, as pessoas até comem uma fatia de bolo e bebem um copo de brandi aguardente "para manter o Maio fora". Teorias. A celebração é bonita todavia, pá. Como é costume do Algarve de montar bonecas tipo-espantalho representando Maios personificados machos e/ou fémeas, deixados às bermas de estradas como celebração de colheitas e florires da Primavera, mas depois de quase serem um costume perdido (como o montar de confrarias de dança chamadas Maias que faziam um concurso de bailes de dança com a maioria das pessoas) voltando como maioritariamente uma sátira localizada.
